Ceiling fan installation

A good fan takes the edge off a Barossa summer for a fraction of what the air conditioner costs to run, and keeps working in winter pushing warm air back down. We fit new fans, replace tired ones, and run new points where there is nothing there yet.

Benefits

Why a ceiling fan earns its keep

Cheap to run next to air conditioning

A fan uses a tiny fraction of the power an air conditioner does. Run both and you can set the aircon a couple of degrees higher for the same comfort.

Useful in winter too

Most fans reverse. Run it slowly the other way and it pushes the warm air that has collected at the ceiling back down into the room.

DC motors are quiet

A modern DC fan is noticeably quieter than an older AC one, has more speeds and uses less power. Worth it in a bedroom where noise matters.

Fitted properly so it does not wobble

A wobbling fan is almost always a fixing problem. We mount to something solid and balance it, rather than hanging it off the plasterboard and hoping.

What we do

  • Replacing an existing fan, or converting a light point to a fan point
  • Running a new point where there is nothing there, including the switching
  • Fixing to a proper mounting point so the fan does not wobble or drum
  • Wall controls or remote, and separate switching for the fan and its light
  • Outdoor-rated fans for alfresco areas and verandahs
  • Checking blade clearance and height so it is safe and does not strobe your lights
  • Taking the old fan away with us

What we check first

Before quoting we look at a few things:

  • Ceiling height, since blades need safe clearance from the floor
  • Whether there is roof access above the spot you want it
  • What is already there: a light point, a fan point, or nothing
  • Room size, which sets the blade span you want
  • Whether you want a light in the fan or separate lighting
  • For alfresco, whether the spot is exposed enough to need an outdoor-rated fan
Good to know

Common questions

Can you put a ceiling fan where there is only a light?

Usually yes. A light point is often a good starting place, though the fixing has to be solid enough to carry a fan and you may want separate switching for the fan and the light.

AC or DC fan?

DC fans are quieter, use less power and have more speed settings, for a bit more up front. In a bedroom the quietness is usually worth it. In a shed or alfresco, an AC fan is fine.

Why does my fan wobble?

Almost always the mounting rather than the fan. If it is not fixed to something solid, every small imbalance shows up as a wobble. We fix to a proper point and balance it.

Can I have a fan outside?

Yes, with an outdoor-rated fan. Standard indoor fans are not built for the moisture and will not last in an exposed spot.

Do you supply the fan or do I?

Either. Plenty of people buy their own and we fit it. If you would rather we sorted it, we will recommend something that suits the room.
