Why upgrade your switchboard

Safety switches on your circuits

Modern safety switches (RCDs) cut the power in a fraction of a second if they detect current leaking to earth, such as through a person. Older fuse boards often have none, or only cover some circuits.

Room for solar, batteries and EV chargers

Adding solar, a battery, an EV charger or a new air conditioner usually needs space on the board. A modern board gives you that room, with spare space for later.

Easier to live with

No more hunting for fuse wire in a blackout. Circuit breakers reset with a flick, and every circuit is clearly labelled so you know what's what.

Ready for surge protection

A new board is the best time to fit whole-home surge protection, so the hard-wired gear like your fridge, air conditioner and hot water is covered too.

Signs it's time to upgrade

If any of these sound like your home, it's worth getting your board looked at:

  • Ceramic or rewireable fuses instead of circuit breakers
  • No safety switches, or only one covering a few circuits
  • Breakers or fuses that trip or blow often
  • A burning smell, buzzing, heat marks or scorching on the board
  • Planning solar, a battery, an EV charger, air conditioning or a renovation
  • A home more than 30 years old that has never had its board checked

What the upgrade includes

  • An inspection of your existing board, wiring, main earth and meter panel
  • A fixed price quote that tells you exactly what's being replaced
  • A new switchboard with a main switch and circuit breakers
  • Safety switches on your circuits, as the current wiring rules require
  • Clear labelling of every circuit
  • The option to add whole-home surge protection while the board is open
  • Testing of every circuit before the power goes back on
  • Compliance paperwork for the work

Common questions

My old fuses still work. Do I need to upgrade?

Rewireable fuses can still protect your wiring from overloads, but they don't give the shock protection a safety switch (RCD) does. An upgrade also gives you room for new circuits and makes faults easier to reset. We'll tell you honestly whether your board needs replacing now or can wait.

How long does a switchboard upgrade take?

Most homes are done in a day, depending on the number of circuits and whether the meter panel needs work. We give you a fixed price and a time frame after looking at your board.

Will my power be off?

Yes, for part of the day while the board is changed over. We let you know beforehand so you can plan around the fridge, freezer and anything else that matters.

Can you add surge protection at the same time?

Yes. A switchboard upgrade is the easiest time to fit whole-home surge protection, because the board is already open and there is room on the rail for the device.

What about asbestos in old switchboards?

Some older boards are mounted on panels that may contain asbestos. We check your board first and tell you before any work starts, so it can be handled safely and correctly.

How much does a switchboard upgrade cost?

It depends on the number of circuits, the condition of your wiring and whether the meter panel needs work. We look at your board and give you a fixed price before anything starts.
