Why fit surge protection
Helps reduce surge damage risk
A surge protective device at the switchboard limits the voltage reaching your circuits when a spike arrives from nearby lightning activity, grid switching or large loads starting up.
Covers the whole home
One device at the switchboard helps protect every circuit it supplies, including the hard-wired gear you can't unplug, like the fridge, air conditioner and hot-water system.
Worth it for solar, batteries and EV chargers
Solar inverters, batteries, EV chargers and smart-home equipment are expensive and sensitive to voltage spikes, so they're well worth protecting.
Honest about the limits
Surge protection reduces risk but cannot guarantee protection from every event, such as a direct lightning strike. We explain what it will and won't do for your home.
What the installation includes
- A look at your switchboard, existing safety switches and circuit protection
- Selecting a surge protective device suited to your supply and board
- Installing the device with the correct circuit protection and earth connection
- Testing the installation and checking the device's status indicator
- Advice on extra protection at the power point for sensitive equipment such as computers and TVs
- Compliance paperwork where it is required for the work
Is it suitable for your home?
Most homes can have surge protection fitted. We check a few things first so the device does its job:
- The condition of your switchboard and whether there is space for the device
- The state of your main earthing, which surge protection relies on
- Whether an older fuse or ceramic board should be upgraded or inspected first
- Whether your home has single-phase or three-phase supply
- Where your most sensitive and valuable equipment is, including any solar, battery or EV charger
Common questions
What is whole-home surge protection?
It is a surge protective device installed at your switchboard. When a voltage spike comes into the home, the device helps limit how much of it reaches your circuits and the equipment connected to them.
Will it protect my home from a lightning strike?
It can help reduce the risk from nearby lightning activity and surges on the network, but no device can guarantee protection from a direct strike. We explain this clearly before you decide.
Do I still need surge-protected power boards?
Possibly. Whole-home protection covers the circuits at the switchboard, while a protected power board adds another layer at the point of use for sensitive gear such as computers and TVs. We can advise what makes sense.
Does it protect my solar inverter or EV charger?
It helps protect the circuits that supply them. Some equipment also has its own built-in protection, so we look at your setup and tell you what is already covered.
How long does installation take?
It is usually a short visit at the switchboard, though it depends on the condition of your board. We give you a fixed price after assessing it.
